The recent research interest in using large language models (LLMs) for decision-making tasks has grown due to their world knowledge. Customizing LLMs for specific tasks is resource-intensive and may reduce generalization. Leading models like GPT-4 and Claude are mainly accessible through APIs, making their weights proprietary. This highlights the need for new methods to learn from experiences without updating parameters. Introducing the Experiential Learning (ExpeL) agent, which autonomously gathers experiences and knowledge from training tasks in natural language. During inference, it recalls insights and past experiences to make informed decisions. Empirical results show ExpeL's consistent performance enhancement as it accumulates experiences. It also demonstrates emerging capabilities and transfer learning potential through qualitative observations and experiments.
